Happy new year...

New Year's seems like a long time ago now. That weekend we embarked on potty training our baby Mia. On New Year's Eve we did a pandemic-friendly bonfire with friends and it was perfectly low-key and lovely. After New Year's Day it was busy, back to work.

And then, a domestic terrorist attack. I've been processing. Taking it all in. Learning. Distracting myself. Feeling angry. Sickened. And also, still doing all the things. It feels off that our society has marched on, business as usual. Some people don't want to talk about it; they don't want to talk about "politics." Huh? This is so beyond politics. White supremacists easily storming our capitol, wearing Nazi paraphernalia and hanging a noose... It's so painful to even type out. But people need to pay attention and, yes, talk about it. "Nice" well-meaning people who look away are part of the problem. "Nice people made the best Nazis."

Social media has been interesting terrain lately. It feels weird scrolling through OOTD's and St. Barts surfing stories right now, on the same platforms that are being used to spew hate, spread conspiracy theories and plot insurrection against the government. I feel hesitant to post about seemingly trivial things myself, especially in a time like this. But then again, perhaps the small moments are worth documenting at any time.

Lately I’ve been thinking back to a scene in Armageddon, of all movies. I had seen the film on a rainy day while at sleepaway camp. There was one part that stood out to me: Ben Affleck and Liv Tyler's characters were being lovey dovey and she asked, "Do you think it's possible that anyone else in the world is doing this very same thing at this very same moment?" He replied, "I hope so. Otherwise what the hell are we trying to save?"

In these early days of 2021 I am trying to be extra present during little love moments, while not looking away from what's going on around me. I'm also getting back to blogging and documenting some special moments. Here’s to hoping that many people around the world are doing the same thing at the same time.
