The New Uniform

I've seen a lot of press lately about people not wearing pants. Apparently newscasters and other media professionals are forgoing pants when broadcasting from home. I suppose anyone on a Zoom meeting could be pants-less; we typically only see people's faces and perhaps shirts. Personally I'm not trying to do any "business on the top party on the bottom" lewks. My whole wardrobe these days has been pretty relaxed, save for Passover when the girls and I put on party dresses.

Also unlike some people, I do have a different set of clothes for daytime vs. nighttime. My daytime clothes are essentially workout clothes, which feels appropriate as each day feels like one big extreme workout session - between actually working, managing the kids, cooking and cleaning up after everyone. I also try to squeeze in a jog or walk when I can. After the girls go to bed I deliberately transition to nighttime by showering and changing into my "loungewear." I deem loungewear to be anything even more comfy than workout clothes: essentially, sweats. But make it (relatively) fashion. This brings to mind the uniform of my college days. I am haunted by the go-to outfits that my friends and I rocked those days: Juicy Couture sweatsuits. Pretty sure I wore tight Hanes tank tops underneath. And Uggs on my feet. I am cringing as I think back. And feeling a bit nostalgic. But alas, these days I prefer Alternative Apparel, and I don't leave the house in my loungewear.

I got hooked on Alternative Apparel a few years ago in LA. We were strolling on Abbot Kinney and went into the retail store and basically stocked up on lots of grey basics. My favorites are the Adrian Printed Eco-Fleece Zip Hoodie, Challenger Eco-Fleece Pullover Hoodie, Classic Eco-Jersey Jogger Pants, Long Sleeve Slinky Jersey V-Neck T-Shirt and Slinky Jersey Tank Top. Another brand I like for loungewear is Splendid. I went into the Soho store after meeting girlfriends for a birthday lunch and bought myself some comfy maternity leave clothes as a bday gift to myself. It was a few months after Liv was born and it was one of my first outings without her, in-between feedings and feeling briefly free. I fell for Splendid's Camo Zip Up, Dream Slub Jogger and Dream Slub Pullover. Splendid also has some adorable kid clothes.

I'm also seeing a lot of tie dye sweats on Instagram these days. I'm into it. Maybe I'll jump on the bandwagon and buy myself some tie dye loungewear for Mother's Day. (Hopefully I won't look back on the tie dye trend with revulsion like I do on the Juicies...)

Stay cozy,
AES
