Sandwich

This book! Sandwich by Catherine Newman is a must-read. The novel centers on a family vacationing in Cape Cod over the course of a week. Rocky and her husband, their grown kids, and Rocky's parents all come together in a humble beach-town rental.

Rocky is so deeply relatable. She's based on the author, and I'm reminded of the first book I read by Newman: Waiting for Birdy. (Another must-read, especially for parents of young children, or those expecting.)

I feel bonded with the writer over the depth of our emotions. Her character Rocky seems to be always on the verge of tears, happy or otherwise. I feel the same. Beyond its depth, this book is hysterically funny. I literally laughed out loud while reading. And I dogeared so many pages, to mark so many wise parts.

There are also tough parts, of course. Newman explores menopause, miscarriage and reproductive rights in Sandwich. The novel is graphic and raw and necessary. What a gift to have a book that addresses seemingly unaddressable topics in such beautiful form.

It also delves into the highs and lows of motherhood, and the beauty and pain of watching one's children's grow and launch into the greater world. Newman tackles these huge, meaty topics with the perfect mix of light-heartedness, openness and sagacity.

Big love, AES

P.S. Sandwich even inspired my new favorite sandwich! Tuna with banana peppers. Delish.
