Word of Mouth

My friend and former roommate Tory has introduced me to all the best things. Before it became a household name, or was even on my radar, Tory told me about Eat Pray Love. Tory was wearing the heather grey American Apparel hoodie before it became ubiquitous. I followed suit. Where I didn't follow Tory's lead? In the kitchen. She always loved cooking and food. I always loved other people's cooking and food. I basically lived off of whatever she made + my own peanut butter sandwiches when we lived together.

Now that we live far apart I often think of Tory, my ultimate influencer, especially when I hear about certain things. Recently I read an article written by former food critic and Gourmet Editor in Chief Ruth Reichl. Reichl was a favorite of Tory's. I was indifferent about the food writer. I didn't know what I was missing. After reading Reichl's depiction of a Paris restaurant experience with her family, I craved more. I ordered and read Save Me the Plums in a matter of days. I'm waiting on another book by Reichl: Tender at the Bone.

Reichl must be a good chef, but I'm not even interested in her recipes. (They're likely a little too elevated for my beginner level cooking.) Her writing is delicious, and I can't wait to devour more.

Bon Appetit, and cheers to Tory,
AES
