Tom Lake

My wish for a new, engrossing novel was answered when my friend recommended Tom Lake. Written by renowned author Ann Patchett, Tom Lake tells the story of Lara, a 57-year-old mom and cherry farmer, who once dated a movie star.

Lara is cooped up with her family during Covid, and she recounts the tale of her young love to her grown daughters. We learn about Lara's upbringing, her foray into acting and the decisions that led to her fulfilling life on a Michigan farm.

Patchett weaves a brilliant tale. Tom Lake is spellbinding, wise and also relatable. It's deep, totally original and a page-turner. I'm sorry to have finished the novel. There's so much to unpack; I want to chat about it. Despite being a book lover, I'm not typically a book club gal, but for this novel I'd make an exception.

Get it, read it, let's discuss.
