Summer Books Last Licks

Summer, don't go. I love autumn but I'm savoring the current humid, sticky weather and the sound of crickets every night. See below for my summer reading recap:

Bad Summer People
This novel takes place in Fire Island and features a friend group staying at their summer houses in the fictional Salcombe (based on the real Saltaire). This book delivers on its title; it presents some bad people with few redeeming qualities. I would've enjoyed it a bit more if the characters were further developed and relatable. But I did appreciate the message that all people, even those with a perfect facade, have baggage. Overall, a good, juicy summer read.

Pieces of Blue
This novel is clever but depressing. A family suffers a loss and relocates to Hawaii to refurbish a motel. It's a page-turner but didn't bring me joy. The book is reminiscent of The Last Thing He Told Me and also features a devastating weather event. Overall, too stressful for me, but endorsed by one of my favorite authors of all time, Maria Semple.

The Guest
This book is so well-written. It's the kind of novel where you think, the author must be writing from experience, otherwise how would this person have this insight and genius mind? If that's the case then author Emma Cline has lived a fascinating life. The protagonist of The Guest is basically a sex worker mooching off people in the Hamptons. I was hooked and curious while reading. But the end felt like a cop out. Do read and let me know your thoughts.

The Perfect Couple
I love reading Elin Hilderbrand novels because I love reading books that take place in my favorite summer destination, Nantucket. Also, Hilderbrand is a master of mysteries; she kept me guessing throughout the storyline centering on a Maid of Honor found dead in the Harbor. If you're in the mood for a twisty whodunit, this is a good pick.
