Open
October was a doozy and I am totally spent, but I am super excited to write about my new favorite book, Open. I picked up Andre Agassi's autobiography after seeing it mentioned a couple of times recently. It must have been serendipity that I was seeing Open in the ether, considering it's over ten years old.
Time says it's "one of the best sports autobiographies of all time... One of the better memoirs out there, period." I couldn't agree more. I'm not particularly interested in sports, but I am interested in people. Agassi is a fascinating figure. He was raised by a bully father who was determined to make him a tennis star. Of course Mr. Agassi succeeded and, despite hating tennis, Andre Agassi became one of the best players in the world. He also had a rebel reputation, a juicy celeb-filled personal life and a solid crew of interesting characters for best friends.
Agassi is a deep thinker and he divulges much in his book. His memory of small, but significant, details is astounding. He shares specifics on his marriages, he dishes on famous friends and acquaintances, and he dives into his insecurities and inner workings of his psyche. You do not need to be a fan of tennis to fall for this autobiography. It's a page-turner full of heart and wisdom. Order it here, crack it open.
