1.5 Books Review

After The Paper Palace I read More Than Words. In the novel, author Jill Santopolo weaves a fast-paced tale about a young woman finding herself, at a time when the world around her seems to be falling apart. Protagonist Nina is dealing with a sick parent, a turning point in her career and a shocking revelation regarding her family's past. There's romance, as well. The book is well-written and engrossing. It's sad at times but overall it’s an inspiring tale.

I rarely do this, but after More Than Words I started a novel and... didn't finish it. I hate giving up on books. This book in particular has an esteemed reputation. In fact, it won the Pulitzer Prize. The Overstory is an impassioned novel about trees and their effects on a handful of people, spanning generations. There's much more to it, but I couldn't bring myself to pay close attention or continue reading. I stayed committed for 162 pages, but getting to the end at page 502 wasn't happening. Every night as I cracked open the paperback I got cranky. This again. I'm sure it really is a masterpiece. But it's not my cup of tea, at least not right now. One silver lining of starting The Overstory, however, is that I am paying closer attention to the trees around me. They truly are glorious, life-giving creatures. I didn't get hooked on The Overstory but I'm definitely feeling like more of a tree hugger these days.

P.S. Cool trees.
